Correctional Officer

The State of South Carolina is seeking Correctional Officers for its various institutions. The position offers a competitive salary range of $44,682 to $50,000, depending on the institution. This full-time role involves maintaining security, custody, and control of inmates in a correctional setting.

Key responsibilities include:

• Maintaining control in inmate dorms, cafeteria, work sites, and surrounding areas.
• Instructing and directing inmates assigned to various work details.
• Maintaining and reporting inmate count and daily logs; preparing and submitting miscellaneous reports.
• Maintaining surveillance and searching for contraband.
• Maintaining and inspecting buildings for cleanliness and sanitation; requisitioning and directing the issuance of supplies, tools, and equipment; maintaining inventory of equipment.
• Escorting visitors and civilian employees through assigned facilities.
• Ensuring that inmates receive prescribed medical and behavioral treatments.
• Controlling gate towers or other special posts.
• Making prescribed security inspections and searches of specified buildings, building contents, grounds, vehicles, and people and taking necessary action.
• Maintaining and operating security devices in a security setting, such as gates and doors, weapons, and mechanical devices.
• Instructing and counseling officers concerning duty requirements.
• Investigating inmate/resident complaints and taking appropriate action.
• Serving as backup for any dorm/building dispute requiring assistance and crisis intervention; making reports to appropriate personnel.

Minimum and additional requirements include:

• U.S. citizenship.
• Age 18 and over.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver's license.
• Non-offensive tattoos, unless gang-related or on the face/head.
• No convictions for crimes with a maximum sentence of one year or more, or a fine of $1,000.
• Must pass a physical exam administered by the South Carolina Department of Corrections.
• Successfully complete the Correctional Officer Basic Certification Course within the first six months of placement.
